John Lennon appears on the cover of LOOK magazine.
George Harrison begins ten days in Bombay, India, composing, arranging and recording music for the film “Wonderwall” (and album, “Wonderwall Music”) at De Lane Lea studios; he is visited by Peter Tork of The Monkeys, and Eric Clapton of Cream.

JANUARY 12
The Beatles Film Productions changed its name to Apple Film Limited and Apple Music Limited changed its name to Apple Corps Limited.

JANUARY 13

Johnny Cash played a show, which was recorded, for his forthcoming live album at Folsom Prison, near Sacramento, California in-front of 2,000 inmates.

JANUARY 1
Billboard magazine reported that for the first time albums had outsold singles in the US with album sales reaching over 192 million units.

JANUARY 2

The entire shipment of John and Yoko's album 'Two Virgins' was seized by authorities in New Jersey due to the full frontal nude photograph of the couple on the cover. The album was eventually wrapped in plain brown paper in record stores.

JANUARY 5

Jimi Hendrix was jailed for one day in Stockholm, Sweden on drink charges after going berserk and destroying everything in his room at the Goteberg Hotel.

Time magazine notes that the ‘flop’ “Magical Mystery Tour” will net The Beatles $2 million. The film is rebroadcast in color over BBC television.

JANUARY 6
Daily Mirror reports that John Lennon and his father, Alfred, have been reunited; Alfred Lennon had left home when John was a child.
