She sings in french, in spanish, in german, in italian... and, of course, she sings in english too. Because she is a British singer, born in Dagenham, United Kingdom, on the 26th February, 1947. Sandra Ann Goodrich, aka Sandie Shaw, was one of the most successful British female singers of the 1960s. With her hair, slender frame, model cheekbones and outfits, she has been described as the ultimate working-class 'it' girl. She was also notable for her quirk of usually appearing barefoot. After being discovered by Adam Faith, she began her recording career at the age of 17, and only three years later, in 1967, she won the Eurovision Song Contest with "Puppet On A String" (a song she hated, but now says: «It is a song which has been the source of much grief, hilarity, circumspection and I have to admit, financial reward for many years.»). Maybe a lot of people know her only because this famous hit. But Sandie was much more, indeed much much more, like this collection intend to proove.

Hot on the heels of Sandie Shaw winning the Eurovision song contest with "Puppet on a String," which also hit the coveted number one spot in the U.K. charts, Pye assembled this package, which carries on the pop/MOR tradition established by Shaw with her previous U.K. releases, "Sandie" (1965) and "Me" (1966). Shaw was a regular on the BBC during the lead up to the Eurovision competition finale. Through a voting process, several songs featured here were performed over several weeks, with "Puppet on a String" eventually winning the heats, despite her infamous hatred of the track, which she described as "sexist drivel with a cuckoo-clock tune." There are stronger selections than the title track here, including a revamp of the often overlooked 1964 B-side "I'd Be Far Better Off Without You" and undeniably catchy runner-up in the heats, "Tell the Boys." With a total of 12 tracks, this is an enjoyable listen for Shaw devotees and fans of 1960s pop/MOR at its best. (Rob Flanagan in AllMusic)

 In December of 1969, right at the end of the most remarkable decade ever for recorded music, Pye Records released this fifth Sandie Shaw studio album proper "Reviewing the Situation". This was an album that seemingly ran so counter to all that Sandie had released before or has happily celebrated it as her defining album producing debut. The album sported an in-vogue gatefold sleeve with psychedelic cover design (by Clifford Richards) featuring kaleidoscopic dedications ‘to the people who have, by their presence or ability influenced pop in the last decade’. This statement, printed on the inside of the gatefold, could equally be applied to the music. Kicking off with an upbeat version of Lionel Bart’s “Reviewing the Situation” from the hit musical Oliver!, Sandie next gives us her seductive take on Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay”. A jangling “Mama Roux” is followed by a plaintive reading of The Bee Gees “Sun in my Eyes” and with a cabaret fuelled reading of Rufus Thomas’ 1963 hit “Walking the Dog” which closes side one.

A lounge-club favourite, a Latin jazz-lite recording of The Beatles’ debut single “Love Me Do” slides effortlessly into a quintessentially Shaw vocal on Donovan’s “Oh Gosh”. Next up, and astonishing if you contrast with the oom-path and kazoo of the “Think it All Over” single released only weeks earlier, is a gutsy take of Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones’ “Your Time is Gonna Come” – giving Sandie Shaw the honour of being first known artist to cover a Led Zeppelin song. Downbeat again for “Coconut Grove” then to the closing the original album with a part genius / part insane (isn’t it always?) extended work out of The Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil”. “Frank Mills” (from Hair) and a beautiful a cappella version of Paul McCartney’s “Junk”, two previously unreleased tracks recorded around the same time as the album sessions, are included as bonus tracks. A long lens judgement of "Reviewing the Situation" would be as a kind of historical ‘all back to mine’ album compiled and perfomed by the artist; a tantalising glimpse into 1969’s private musical world of Sandie Shaw. Which is exactly why this album, for all its apparent contradictions, is so vital.

The SANDIE SHAW Supplement

Consisting of songs performed on her short-lived BBC television series, "The Sandie Shaw Supplement" was a very mixed bag, reflecting the repertoire of the all-around entertainer that she was apparently trying to become. The renditions of pop standards are okay, and the covers of pop-rock hits like "Satsifaction," "Homeward Bound," and "Route 66" mediocre-to-embarrassing; there are also some tunes like "Change of Heart" that are reasonable continuations of her pure pop singles of the mid-'60s. It's a very uneven effort--selected tracks will be enjoyed by her fan club, but it will convert few new listeners to her cause. This Salvo CD reissue adds eleven tracks from 1968-69 singles, mixing competent Chris Andrews-penned throwbacks to the vintage Shaw sound with some of her worst material (the vaudevillian "Show Me," an ill-conceived cover of "Those Were the Days"). But one of the singles, 1969's "Monsieur Dupont," would be her last big British hit. (Richie Unterberger in AllMusic)
