Original released on Double EP SMMT-1 (stereo)
(UK 1967, December 8)
He rang to say he'd be late. I told him on the phone that the house was in Blue Jay Way. And he said he could find it okay... he could always ask a cop. So I waited and waited. I felt really nackered with the flight, but I didn't want to go to sleep until he came. There was a fog and it got later and later. To keep myself awake, just as a joke to pass the time while I waited, I wrote a song about waiting for him in Blue Jay Way.»), “Flying” (um instrumental assinado pelos 4 Beatles e feito apenas pela necessidade de se criar um ambiente musical para uma determinada cena do filme) e acima de tudo por causa de “I Am the Walrus”, um original de John Lennon que a compôs durante diversas viagens de LSD («The first line was written on one acid trip one weekend. The second line was written on the next acid trip the next weekend, and it was filled in after I met Yoko. I was writing obscurely, a la Dylan, in those days. It's from 'The Walrus and the Carpenter.' 'Alice in Wonderland.' To me, it was a beautiful poem.»)
The U.S. version (Capitol SMAL 2835, released 1967, November 27) of the soundtrack for the Beatles' ill-fated British television special embellished the six songs that were found on the British "Magical Mystery Tour" double EP with five other cuts from their 1967 singles. The psychedelic sound is very much in the vein of Sgt. Pepper's, and even spacier in parts (especially the sound collages of "I Am the Walrus"). Unlike Sgt. Pepper's, there's no vague overall conceptual/thematic unity to the material, which has made "Magical Mystery Tour" suffer slightly in comparison. Still, the music is mostly great, and "Penny Lane," "Strawberry Fields Forever," "All You Need Is Love," and "Hello Goodbye" were all huge, glorious, and innovative singles. The ballad "The Fool on the Hill," though only a part of the "Magical Mystery Tour" soundtrack, is also one of the most popular Beatles tunes from the era.
