"Pretty on the Inside" - Hole's debut album has a misleading title in a way because it isn't about people who has everything OK in their lives but rather about people who are broken inside. The opening song "Teenage Whore" is one of the most brutal and interesting songs which has ever started any rock album. It is about mother-daughter relationship of a prostitute. "Babydoll" has deeper meaning too when it is about watching someone's insecurity when the person realized becoming the similar person. "Garbadge Man" is another wonderful meaningful song. "Good Sister/Bad Sister" is one of an excellent track. "Star Belly" doesn't seem to be a real song but more like an interlude before the title song which is about a sex worker, it is actually a very personal theme to the vocalist Courtney Love who worked as a stripper many times. Is "Pretty On the Inside" the best album of Hole? It is an amazing album because it is honest and it is dealing with issues people don't usually talk about. It isn't a beautiful album if you are looking for flowers and sunshine but it's beautiful if you are looking for real songs with deep meaning. (Reijo Pippula in AllMusic)
