TUDELLA CANTA ARTUR FONSECA

Edição Original em LP GALLOTONE, GALP 1107
(South Africa, 1959)

This album is dedicated to all Rato’s countrymen (and countrywomen), those good people born in the coasts of the Indic Ocean that one day has felt the fascination of that land, unique in the whole world. Like João Maria Tudella, who was born in Lourenço Marques, the 27 of August, 1929. After his adolescence in Coimbra, where, besides the studies, he made the first steps into the world of music, in 1950, when once more he went back to Mozambique for the holidays, he decides not to return to Portugal anymore. In March of that same year, with only 20 years, he stars in the Radio Club of Mozambique singing Coimbra’s fado (a very popular portuguese kind of music). After the good reviews in the press he receives a special attention from Amália Rodrigues, the diva of fado, who is on tour at Mozambique the following year. These are Amália’s words: «I have heard many times people sing Coimbra’s fado but you are the first one to give me emotion.» In 1952 Tudella also starts singing in Rodhesia and South Africa. During one of his perfomances at the club The Colony, in Johannesburg, he receives an invitation to record for the South African Gallotone label, starting that way his discography career. 1959 is a key-year for Tudella: the song "Kanimambo", written for him by composer Arthur Fonseca, becomes the biggest success of all time in Mozambique and, later, in Portugal, becoming João Maria Tudella a first figure of the national song; his popularity soon extend to some European countries and also to Brazil. Still before the 50’s decade arrives at its end, the present album is edited, being the sixth "Long Playing" recorded in Johannesburg and entirely composed with Arthur Fonseca’s music. Today it turned into a real classic from those times, that strangely was never remastered into cd, like so many other rarities of the past. So, It is with a certain pride that your friend Rato shares this record, after some digital cleanness, which gives these songs all the pure original sound.

Just downoaded, listening this LP right now. Sounds very nice (as usual) but... could we have a few words of presentation in english (ou en français, tant qu'à faire)? Yeah, I know, the language of music is universal, emotions need no explanation, just curious to know a bit more about what i listen... And thanks again for the music.

Yes the translation helps, it's always nice to know a bit more about an album we like (who made it, where this music came from, things like that..). This share is a real nice surprise, thanks again.
