CELSO MURILLO: "Mr. RITMO"

CELSO MURILO: “Mr. RITMO”
Edição Original em LP Pawal SP 70.007 (1961?)

A cult album from João Gilberto's favourite organist, Celso Murilo. Mr Ritmo incorporates the heavy afro-cuban influence of the time, as well as pointing to the future of Ed Lincoln-style brazilian dance music.
The following is a translation of the original liner notes (see the back cover for the original notes in portuguese language): Celso Levanhagen is the real name of this 'mineiro' from Baependí, still very young but so decidedly advanced on the road to success and popularity. This superb organist and no less a pianist can be found in the night-club Drink, where he was discovered by the directors of Pawal Records. Impressed by the powerful brilliance of the young 'mineiro', they invited him to record an LP on their newly-founded label, and, it ended up as you can hear - an auspicious beginning and an absolute success. Celso Murilo had already been presented to the record buying public on two excellent long playing records - 'Sambas Na Passarela' and 'Ritmos Na Passarela' whereupon, as the titles suggest, authentic hits flowed in procession for the delight of those who love great interpretations of great music. On these albums Celso impressed all those who heard him with his pure technique, ability to improve and general talent as a bandleader. We don't know which of these samba dance tracks were top of the pops with you the listening jury, but the true victor without shadow of a doubt is this new and excellent interpreter of popular music: Celso Murilo - our 'Mr Ritmo'. So, now well-known and deservedly lauded, here he is once more showcased in this spectacular LP, where we celebrate more of his stupendous performances. On this LP, recorded in Mono and Stereophonic, we hear a selection of cha-cha-chas and sambas, hand picked for your musical delectation. In our opinion 'Mr Ritmo' will only serve to solidify and consolidate Celso Murilo's prestige with a wider public, a public that's young and carefree, that hears this type of music and dances and sings, in the reflection of Celso's own youth and vitality.

RITA 2ND SOLO ALBUM

RITA LEE: “HOJE É O PRIMEIRO DIA DO RESTO DA SUA VIDA”
EDIÇÃO ORIGINAL: LP POLYDOR 2451.017 (1972)
Some Reviews:

Following the Mutantes style, it was cdredited to Rita Lee Jones as a solo labum, but it wasn't: It is just another genuine Mutantes album, although the last with Rita as a member of the crew. And I love this album, because the whole band shows an fantastic developing as musicians. Arnaldo Baptista is the producer, once more, and many of the compositions were written by him and Lee Jones. This album was made in a late psychedelic style (well, remember that the rest of the world uses to be some years behind U.S.A. and Western Europe in terms of international cultural trends), but full of talent. Lee Jones and Baptista talents. They were really great together. Listen carefully to "Vamos Tratar da Saúde", "Hoje é o Primeiro Dia do Resto da Sua Vida", "De Novo Aqui Meu Bom José", "Frique Comigo" and "Tapupukitipa" (the last, written to be a kind of answer to 70's Brazilian Military Government censorship - in cifrated language, the title means something similar to "F... you"). (Fernando Fonseca)
if you're into the freaky psychedelic stuff, this is one of her very best records. The approach is very Mutantes-ish, though in reality this is way better than most of the band's official albums. Sure, it's just as goofy and clunky, but the ideas and mood are more sustained from track to track, and as an album it hangs together much better. Prescient parodies of lounge music and lumpen boogie rock seek a detente with some seriously artsy/psychedelic efforts, including music concrete and cute tape loop effects... very similar in tone to Caetano Veloso's album, "Araca Azul," from the same year. I dunno if this is something you'd put on when you had company visiting, but if you've come this far with the whole Tropicalia thing, then you should certainly check this one out. (Joe Sixpack)

OST: "ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE"

OST/JOHN BARRY: "ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE"
Original Released as LP United Artists UAS29020 (UK), January 1970

John Barry knew from the age of nine that he wanted to be a composer. Helping his father run a cinema had exposed young Barry to countless movie soundtracks, though he was initially drawn to classical music. However, his discovery of swing jazz broadened his horizons, and he took up the trumpet. This combined knowledge of brass instrumentation and the syncopation of jazz became crucial for his work as a composer.
On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (the first and last 007 movie with actor George Lazenby, in which the secret agent marries his Bond-Girl – Diana Rigg – in Portugal, in spite of she’s being killed soon after), like every John Barry Bond soundtrack, repays close attention to detail. Trumpets blare, timpani boom, snare drums crack and rattle, strings soar and counterpoint the brass – usually on angular intervals – and such exotic instruments as the cimbalom evoke far-flung corners of the world. Just as Bond had all the latest gadgets, so did Barry: he gave the electric guitar and electric bass prominent roles in his orchestra, and the tittle track is a lovely slice of 1960s pop with pioneering use of synthesizer.
The John Barry/Hal David love theme, “We Have All The Time in the World”, was the final song recorded by legendary performer Louis Armstrong, whose soulful vocals later propelled the single to the top of the British pop charts (see back cover for track list)

LHASA'S 2ND ALBUM

For the first time Rato Records makes an exception and shares a complete album of the present days. The reason is simple: LHASA was the greatest discovery I have found for years and this second album, from 2003, is even better than the first one. So... I feel that I need to share it with all my friends. And if you really love these songs go and buy the CD - it's an excelent digipak edition with a separate booklet with all the lyrics in different languages; nice paintings too; and it is not expensive (I've bought it through Amazon - "CD 24 in Germany" - for just 7 pounds, including shipping costs). The track list is on the back cover.

MUSTANG 69
